Canada’s inaction in the case of Omar Khadr puzzling, embarrassing

The reasons against trying Omar Khadr before a military tribunal in Guantanamo Bay keep piling up, yet the Canadian government continues to refuse to do anything about it. Khadr, who was born in Toronto and is a Canadian citizen, has been held in Guantanamo for more than five years. His trial, on charges of lobbing a grenade that killed U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Christopher Speer, has been repeatedly delayed, and is now expected to begin in the next few months.

But new evidence casts doubt on whether Khadr should have been charged in the first place. According to Khadr’s military lawyer, U.S. Navy Lt.-Cmdr. William Kuebler, the U.S. government “manufactured evidence to make it look like Omar was guilty.”
