Alleged participant at ‘terrorist camp’ told it was winter camping trip: factum

BRAMPTON, Ont. - New court documents in the alleged Toronto terror plot say an alleged jihadist training camp was nothing more than a screening exercise for potential recruits where participants made regular runs to Tim Hortons.
The defence factum for one of the 15 suspects says the only person to actually take live ammunition into the camp was a police informant.
The alleged participation of the suspects in a terrorist camp is a central pillar of the prosecution’s case.
But the lawyer behind the factum says his client was only told he was going on a winter camping trip.
The factum also alleges it was the police informant who taught the campers how to shoot a gun.
The factum was filed with a Brampton, Ont., court today as a judge considers whether to place a partial publication ban over the trial, which would shield the accuseds’ names from being linked to specific accusations.
The lawyer says his client would suffer under a publication ban because he wouldn’t be disassociated from some of the worst allegations being made.
The lawyer also says that while a video of a suspect talking about his intentions to carry out terrorist attacks is chilling, police also say there was no real threat that the suspect could put his plans into action.
“In and of itself, it is compelling theatre, however it should be noted that (his) jihadist ambitions, to the extent he had them, were limited only by the fact that he has neither the means, skill or opportunity to put them in place,” the factum states.
“He has been described as ‘blowing smoke’ by … a primary officer on the file, and without ‘two cents to rub together’ by (the police informant).”
