Alleged participant at ‘terrorist camp’ told it was winter camping trip: factum

Source: Canadian Press - 26-mar-08

BRAMPTON, Ont. - New court documents in the alleged Toronto terror plot say an alleged jihadist training camp was nothing more than a screening exercise for potential recruits where participants made regular runs to Tim Hortons. The defence factum for one of the 15 suspects says the only person to actually take live ammunition into the camp was a police informant.

The alleged participation of the suspects in a terrorist camp is a central pillar of the prosecution’s case. But the lawyer behind the factum says his client was only told he was going on a winter camping trip.

The biased media is back … the sequel

26-mar-08

Special to captiveincanada.com

Again…the media, this time led by the Toronto Star, has took the bait of the prosecution, who partially removed the ban, with the start of the trial of the youths to allow for the so-called evidence he presented in the first day to be published. Again, they pollute the public opinion by showing the government, and only the government, views. So, after 22 months of silence from the media, the first come back is to destroy the credibility of these people, by presenting the other side of the story, in detail, as if they are showing facts.

Injustice in Canada (17)

25-mar-08

17. it’s now on TV … Watch it and Act!

In the continuous battle against the darkness of the present government and its collaborators within the so-called “Law!” enforcement agencies and Intelligence! Agencies (CICS and RCPM), a glimpse of fairness has emerged with the release of the “Unfair Dealing” documentary. The sole credit for this documentary goes to David Weingarten, a talented reporter/filmmaker, and most importantly a fair human being who rose above the baseless allegations plotted by the power-seeking right wing extremist government, and the noise made by the profit-seeking media. He successfully connected the history of these agencies with the present events to draw a better and more logical picture of what is really happening.

Trial begins for youth charged in alleged Toronto bomb plot

Source: CBC News - 25-mar-08

The trial of one of 15 suspects charged in the alleged Toronto bomb plot of 2006 began Tuesday in a courtroom in Brampton, Ont. The Crown previewed the evidence it plans to present - calling it “shocking and sensational” - and requested a publication ban on evidence that could prejudice the right to a fair trial for his alleged co-conspirators.

The accused, who was charged under the Youth Criminal Justice Act and cannot be named, pleaded not guilty.

Crown seeks publication ban as homegrown terrorism case begins in Brampton

A youth charged with belonging to a homegrown terror cell under Canada’s new anti-terrorism legislation pleaded not guilty in a Brampton courtroom today.

Lawyers are now arguing about a publication ban. As expected, the day begin with an application by the government seeking a limited publication ban on the identities of the adults charged with belonging to the so-called Toronto 18. The identity of the youth is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The ban, the government says, is necessary to ensure the adults receive a fair trial when their case makes it before a jury. But media outlets wanting to cover the landmark case hope to block the move. “The whole course of this prosecution has essentially been secret since the arrest and this application threatens to continue that veil of secrecy,” said Paul Schabas, a lawyer who is representing several media outlets in a bid to block a ban.

Crusading Terrorism: How Canada and America Terrorized the Citizens

Canada’s inaction in the case of Omar Khadr puzzling, embarrassing

Source: Vancouver Sun - 21-mar-08

The reasons against trying Omar Khadr before a military tribunal in Guantanamo Bay keep piling up, yet the Canadian government continues to refuse to do anything about it. Khadr, who was born in Toronto and is a Canadian citizen, has been held in Guantanamo for more than five years. His trial, on charges of lobbing a grenade that killed U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Christopher Speer, has been repeatedly delayed, and is now expected to begin in the next few months.

But new evidence casts doubt on whether Khadr should have been charged in the first place. According to Khadr’s military lawyer, U.S. Navy Lt.-Cmdr. William Kuebler, the U.S. government “manufactured evidence to make it look like Omar was guilty.”

KHADR ALLEGES RAPE THREAT

Source: National Post - 18-mar-08

NEW YORK - Omar Khadr alleges serious mistreatment by his U.S. captors — including that he was threatened with rape and was used as a mop to clean up urine on his cell floor –in his first public comments since he was detained on an Afghan battlefield in 2002.

The Toronto-born accused terrorist, who was 15 when the U.S. government claims he lobbed a hand grenade that fatally injured a U.S. Special Forces soldier, also says he told a Canadian delegation in 2003 that the Americans “would torture” him — so he told them “whatever they wanted” to hear.

Canadian terror suspect Khadr accuses U.S. interrogators of abuse

Source: Canadian Press - 18-mar-08

WASHINGTON - Canadian terror suspect Omar Khadr says he was forced to implicate himself in a bid to placate terribly abusive U.S. interrogators who dropped him, shackled him for hours, spit on him and threatened him with rape. In an affidavit released Tuesday, Khadr outlined in detail what happened after he was captured during a firefight in Afghanistan on July 27, 2002. The firefight ended with American soldiers shooting him twice in the back. Unconscious for a week afterward, Khadr said the interrogations in Bagram began while he was still on a stretcher and that he cried because of the pain inflicted during questioning.

Protesters rally across Canada to speak out against wars in Afghanistan, Iraq

Source: Associated Press - 15-mar-08

TORONTO — Thousands of protesters filled streets across the country on Saturday to speak out against Canada’s military mission in Afghanistan and to mark the upcoming five-year anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq.

Rallies were organized in 20 communities nationwide in a joint call for the federal government to recall its troops from Afghanistan and instead adopt a peacekeeping role, which protesters said is Canada’s true calling.

“The majority of Canadians want the troops to come home now - shame on Parliament,” said Diane Alexopoulos at a rally on the front lawn of the Ontario legislature in Toronto.
