“Toronto 18″ stuck in legal limbo

Source: Peoples Voice and Political Affairs - 20-feb-08

A week ago, a man moved into the cell beneath Fahim Ahmad. “I hear him singing, you know, out loud,” Fahim says. Fahim is talking to me on a poor-quality telephone line from the Don Valley Jail in Toronto. This twenty-minute conversation is Fahim’s only connection with the outside world for the day.

Charged for terrorism, accused is granted bail (Yasin Mohamad)

Source: Toronto Star, 20-dec-07

After hearing that he had been granted bail this morning in a Brampton court, accused homegrown terrorist Yasin Mohamed smiled and locked eyes with his beaming father. As the decision was read, audible sighs of relief could be heard from relatives of the 26-year-old, who is charged with belonging to a cell that was allegedly plotting to bomb several targets in Ontario.

“We are very relieved,” said father Mohamed Hagi-Mohamud during a break in the proceedings, after saying a prayer of thanks in a quiet corner of the courthouse hallway.

Appeal to the Canadian Conscience and Justice

On behalf of the Canadian Political Prisoners
Shareef Abdelhaleem, Zakaria Amara and Fahim Ahmad

On June 2, 2006, the lives of three young Canadian citizens, along with others, were changed forever. Like other young Canadians, these men aspired to complete a degree or find a job, and settle down to start a family of their own. Instead, on this night, their dreams were shattered when more than 400 heavily armed police officers stormed their homes in the Greater Toronto Area. Doors were broken, furniture was destroyed, and women and children were pushed to the floor. These young Canadian men, with others were charged of being alleged members of a purported Islamic terrorist cell that was allegedly planning to explode some buildings in downtown Toronto! They were taken away from their scared and shattered families. Another suspect was arrested two months after the raid and released on bail few weeks after his arrest.

P E T I T I O N - End solitary confinement and respect the rights of detainees

17-nov-07

End solitary confinement. Respect the rights of detainees.

Read Petition here: http://www.gopetition.com/online/15315.html

On November 8, 2007, the Toronto Star published an article by Thomas Walkom that exposed the conditions in which several men have been detained at the Don Jail in Toronto.

Fahim Ahmad, Zakaria Amara and Mohammed Dirie are part of the so-called “Toronto 18” - a group of Muslim men and boys who were arrested in June 2006 and accused of terror-related activity. These three men have been held in solitary confinement for 17 months, in cells that measure 4 X 6 X 10 feet.

According to a study by the Correctional Services of Canada, enforced segregation for 60 days is “the most individually destructive, psychologically crippling and socially alienating experience that could conceivably exist within the borders of the country.” In addition, the study notes that solitary confinement often leads to the development of psychosis (auditory and visual hallucinations and delusions), self-harm and suicide in detainees.

Confusion, despair from terror suspect isolated in Don Jail

Source: Toronto Star - 8-nov-07

Thomas Walkom

Fahim Ahmad has decided to break his silence. Seventeen months after he was arrested and jailed as one of the alleged ringleaders of an alleged plot to blow up buildings and behead Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the 23-year-old Mississauga man says he remains baffled by the charges. In his first media interview, Ahmad says he is still waiting for the government to produce a snippet of credible evidence to back up its claims.

“When they first charged me, I never understood them (the charges). I still don’t understand them. They seemed completely made up. They made no sense to me. But then when I hear how much the informers were being paid, I said `Hey, when you’re being paid $4 million for something it doesn’t take too much to make up some kind of story.’ Right?

“(The Crown) says I’m part of some group. What group? Nobody answers. They say: `We’ll tell you in court.’ It’s been a year and a half and still no one answers this question. … I mean, what group is there? They say you planned all these things. I’m just waiting to see some kind of evidence.” — Fahim Ahmad
